Introduction

Over the last quarter we have focused on making PLS-CADD an even better tool for working with LiDAR data. Improvements include vastly faster (4 to 75 times faster!) file open and saves, faster TIN creation and generally better behavior when working with million-plus point files. In addition, we've added a danger tree feature to assist you in using LiDAR for vegetation management.

Program Progress

As mentioned earlier, PLS-CADD has much faster file handling through the use of binary TIN and XYZ file formats. In addition, the TIN and XYZ save operations are now bypassed if the data currently on disk matches that in memory. On top of that we have made a 25% improvement in point filtering, regenerating finite element sag-tension results and a variety of other operations. The new Terrain/Edit/Fence Feature Code Change command allows you to graphically select points and change their feature code, which is very helpful when categorizing LiDAR points. The View/Goto Structure command makes it easy to find a particular structure even in long lines. The combined effect of these improvements is to make working with large data sets easier and more enjoyable.

The Lines/Reports/Structure Loads report now includes the loads for all structures in a single table to make it easier to export them to other applications. Additionally, the Section/Check, Automatic Sagging, Wind & Weight Span and TIN Leg/Guy Extension reports are now customizable and can be exported to tables, ODBC and XML. Finally, the Lines/Reports/Structure Usages report now has a new section titled "Maximum Element Usage Summary" which quickly summarizes the most highly utilized PLS-POLE or TOWER members and insulators for every load case.

TOWER now has member capacity and connection checks as per British Standard 8100.

All of our programs now save separate printer settings (including printer name) for the graphics and report printers.  We have also made some revisions to our help system to accommodate the new Adobe Acrobat Version 6. You should upgrade your PLS applications prior to installing version 6 of Adobe Acrobat.

Web Site Revisions and Additions

Current Versions

The current shipping versions of our software are listed below.

We strongly encourage you to upgrade to the current shipping release of all the applications you own. To do so please send us email at info@powline.com or use the Help/Download Upgrade command. This would also be a good time to use the Help/Check for Updated Manual command to make sure you have the latest edition of the manuals.

As always, we welcome your suggestions and comments on our software.
