The Fall Update

Here in Madison Wisconsin, Fall is upon us. The days grow shorter and the nights colder. Still, there is time for one final North American PLS-CADD class before we risk being snowed in. That class will be held here the week of November 17th. One of the new items that will be covered in the class is the new PLS-POLE RUS structure model library that is now available online. The RUS library provides a reference implementation of these commonly used 69kV through 230kV structures. We developed it as a service for our many clients who use RUS structures (not just REAs!).

The recent TOWER class was a success. Our only regret is that we did not have room for everyone that wanted to attend. Therefore we have scheduled a new class for March 3 - 6, 2009. This class will be one day longer (3.5 vs. 2.5 days) than previous TOWER classes since attendees have requested additional time for working on examples. Regarding TOWER, there is now a Spanish language edition of the TOWER manual available via Help/Check For Updated Manual. We hope to provide Spanish language editions of the PLS-CADD and PLS-POLE manuals next year as well.

LidAR providers continue to upgrade their equipment and supply PLS-CADD users with ever increasing amounts of data. Our efforts to help you manage that volume of data and turn it into useful engineering models continue as well. As part of this work, we have developed a technical note on Memory Management of XYZ points in PLS-CADD. While there are many techniques that allow you to work with massive data sets in the existing PLS-CADD, we intend to simplify this process while greatly extending the capabilities of PLS-CADD by releasing a native 64 bit (Windows x64) edition of PLS-CADD early next year. The 64 bit PLS-CADD will have access to an effectively unlimited amount of memory. To prepare for this, we strongly encourage you to upgrade to a 64 bit edition of Windows. Note that the 32 bit edition of PLS-CADD will continue to be developed and supported for years, but by its nature the 64 bit edition will have more capabilities.

Finally, a note for all system administrators: earlier this year we discovered two bugs in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 that can either degrade or crash our software. While Microsoft has made hotfixes available for both problems, we strongly recommend you either install Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista to get the most from your PLS software.

2009 User Group Meeting/Advanced PLS-CADD Class

A User Group Meeting/Advanced Class will be held in the Midwest during April 2009. Complete details will be sent in our January newsletter, but we are providing advanced notice so you may budget for a trip now.
